RESEARCH

Based on our research, my goal for this project became clear: to create an intuitive, engaging user experience that simplifies learning paths, encourages progress, and supports the educational journey of our users. This vision was to be the guiding light for our redesign efforts.

My initial UI and UX audit revealed several areas needing attention, prompting me to dig deeper. With the help of my product partner, Dan, and our engineering lead, Joe, we set up user interviews that validated my findings and shed light on key assumptions about usability, visual design, and product functionality. These conversations underscored the importance of our focus areas, confirming that addressing these issues would significantly improve user satisfaction and engagement.

PROBLEM

The primary challenge was the outdated, disjointed and incoherent UI/UX of IIN’s digital platforms, which hindered user engagement and learning outcomes. Key issues included a cluttered interface, inconsistent navigation patterns, and a lack of personalized learning pathways. My goal was to create a cohesive, intuitive, and inspiring experience across all devices, encouraging active participation and community building among users.

After identifying the overarching challenge, it became clear that the highest traffic and impact areas of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition’s platform were the Timeline of Classes (Modules), Libraries, Graduation Progress, and the Timed Quiz features. Redesigning these areas promised a substantial impact, as they were central to the user experience and where most pain points were reported. Addressing the usability and visual issues here was not just beneficial but necessary for enhancing the overall product experience.

Legacy

The legacy ‘Module’ timeline was not intuitive. It lacked some basic elements like tracking progress.

Redesign

Intuitive, consistent, feels lighter.

FEATURES

Modules’ Timeline

Redesigning the modules to include clear learning objectives, diversified content types (videos, audio, articles, quizzes), and visual progress indicators (such as a pie-chart) made the learning journey more intuitive and engaging. This approach allowed users to easily track their progress and understand what was expected, significantly improving the learning experience.

Libraries

The library was transformed into a more organized and accessible resource hub, where users could easily find additional content like tips, articles, and coaching materials. By categorizing content and implementing an easy-to-navigate interface, we empowered users to take full advantage of the wealth of resources available, enhancing their learning and development process.

Timed Quiz

The quiz interface was revamped to be more user-friendly and less intimidating, with clear timing mechanisms and immediate feedback on performance. This change helped reduce anxiety around assessments, making the quiz experience more positive and supportive of learning retention.

EXPLORATION

My design explorations were extensive, focusing on how to best implement the identified usability improvements. I utilized a public wall for internal hallway tests, displaying wireframes that invited feedback from various team members. This collaborative approach enabled us to refine concepts before moving into high-fidelity designs, ensuring our solutions were not only innovative but also grounded in real user needs.

Working closely with Dan and Joe, along with our engineering team and QA specialists, we embarked on the implementation phase. We established a design system and library to ensure consistency and efficiency in our development process. A/B testing played a crucial role in validating our design decisions with users, allowing us to iterate based on data-driven insights. Regular meetings with stakeholders and the engineering team ensured a holistic and iterative approach, prioritizing impact and aligning closely with our project goals.

Results & Impacts

The redesign significantly impacted the Institute for Integrative Nutrition's digital platform, evidenced by several key outcomes:

  • User engagement with the modules increased by over 150%, with the enhanced clarity and interactivity driving sustained interaction.

  • The reorganized library saw a 100% increase in usage, indicating that users were finding and leveraging additional resources more effectively.

  • Graduation rates improved, with a 20% increase in students completing their courses on time, thanks to the clearer progress indicators and motivational design elements.

  • Feedback on the timed quizzes became overwhelmingly positive, with a 75% decrease in reported stress levels during assessments, contributing to a more effective learning environment.

  • This project, a collaborative effort spearheaded by myself, Dan, Joe, and supported by our dedicated QA and education teams, not only met but exceeded our initial goals, showcasing the transformative power of thoughtful design in educational technology.
